Course aims:

To encourage participants to explore the art of poetry, fiction and memoir writing, building creative writing confidence and skills; to introduce participants to a range of creative writing ideas, techniques, styles and exercises; to discover inspiration from the Lakeside location and the David Ross Collection exhibition and to support an exploration of different genres of creative writing whilst working towards a finished piece (or collection of pieces).

Course description: Using the artwork in the David Ross Collection exhibition as inspiration for a variety of creative writing exercises, the course will look at the art of creative writing. Workshop activities on elements of poetry, memoir and short-story writing will feed into participants’ discussions about their own and others’ creative writing, with the aim of creating a collection of finished written pieces in a variety of individual styles. (Collecting Words; Creating an Anthology of New Writing will provide the opportunity to collect these into an anthology).

Learning outcomes:

These are the intended outcomes and may be revised in discussion with the class. Students are encouraged to think about and identify their own individual outcomes.

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

1. Write a short piece inspired by the local area and/or the David Ross Collection exhibition

2. Be able to read your own and others’ work critically and analytically and have confidence in your ability to do this.

3. Complete and edit a piece of written work (poetry, memoir or fiction)

Reading and information sources: Is any reading/preparation essential or desirable?

There is no essential reading or preparation but all reading (particularly of poetry, memoir or short stories) is desirable.

Combining discussion about some of the books on the 2012 Booker Short-list with a variety of creative writing exercises and conversations around pieces written by students, the course will look at the art of writing fiction from both author and reader perspectives. Workshop activities on elements of fiction writing will feed into participants’ discussions about their own and others’ fictional writing.

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning: Writing Short Fiction in Nottinghamshire ~ Spring Term 2013

Using the Saturday Night and Sunday Morning exhibition and the local area as inspiration for a variety of creative writing exercises, the course will look at the art of writing short fiction and “capturing the authenticity of ‘normal lives’”. Workshop activities on elements of flash fiction and short-story writing will feed into participants’ discussions about their own and others’ fictional writing.
